Adult Education
Our state-mandated Academic Programs are offered to residents of Norwich and the thirteen surrounding towns that comprise the Norwich Regional Adult Education Cooperative. Supported by local Boards of Education, as well as state and federal grants, these classes to improve basic skills, learn to speak English, or earn a high school diploma are free of charge to the residents of Norwich and Cooperative towns. All Adult Education classes are available to adults from Norwich and Cooperative towns who are age 16 or older and no longer enrolled in public school. Cooperative towns include:

As a Cooperative with a membership of 14 towns, we offer various classes at multiple sites in the Cooperative. Below is a chart showing these sites and classes. The Adult Education Program is sponsored by the Norwich Board of Education in compliance with regulations of the State Department of Education and statutes of the State of Connecticut. Instructors are selected for their expertise in specific areas. However, the Adult Education Program, the Board of Education and the City of Norwich do not promote the private services of the instructors nor the companies with whom they are associated. The Board of Education and the City of Norwich disclaim any and all responsibility for any activities participants may pursue based upon information offered or discussions conducted in an adult education class relating to money management, investment options, business options, personal development, parenting, health care, exercise, personal safety or any other subjects. Courses are provided to expand the knowledge and skills of the participants, and as such, the participants are solely responsible as to how this information and knowledge is applied by them. School Legislation As of July 1, 2001, the age for
compulsory school attendance in Connecticut changed from 16 to 18 years of
age. The law states that
certain steps MUST BE TAKEN in order for 16 or 17 year olds to enroll in
Adult Education to earn their high school diploma in either the GED
program or the High School Credit Diploma program. 1.
The parent or guardian must sign a withdrawal form at the
student’s high school. 2. A copy of this withdrawal form MUST be provided for the student file at adult education BEFORE the student can begin adult education classes. |
