Second Grade News
The second grade classes in Mrs. MacDonald and Miss Hallisey's
classes will be participating in The Flat Stanley Project. They
will become eagerly involved in this project after reading the
book, Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown. In this book, Stanley
Lambchop was squashed flat by a falling bulletin board.

After reading this exciting book, our students construct their own Flat Stanleys. Children take Stanley home and keep a journal of their adventures. Several students design clothing and furniture for Stanley. The children mail their Flat Stanleys to a friend or relative anywhere in the world. Beginning in April, Stanley arrives back in Norwich. Through the use of journals, maps, souvenirs, bulletin boards, and pictures the children have an opportunity to share information about different parts of the world. Although Stanley is flat, he lives a full and exciting life!
SCIENCE
In science, the students have an opportunity to construct ideas through their own inquires, investigations, and analysis. The three hands-on FOSS science kits are Balance and Motion, Organisms, and Weather and Air.
MATH
Second grade students are involved in the challenging Everyday Math program. They use a variety of manipulatives and games to help them better understand the math concepts.
LANGUAGE ARTS
The second grade students work in the Houghton-Mifflin reading series and use a variety of reading material from the Sunshine and Rigby Reading series. They also read many trade books, such as A Chair for My Mother, A New Coat for Anna, and Miss Rumphius.
WRITING
The second graders love
to write. They spend a great deal of time responding to prompts
and writing in personal journals. Their creativity and personal
background knowledge help form their own individual styles as a
budding authors.
SPELLING
The second graders will use a combination of the Cast-A-Spell
program and the Houghton-Mifflin Spelling Program. It is
designed to instill in children a belief in themselves as
outstanding learners. The program will be teaching your
child to spell common, everyday words as well as words that are
very difficult. When your child wants to impress you by
spelling some very difficult words, be impressed! Celebrate
the enthusiasm your child brings home from learning. Each
week a list of words will be sent home. Keep them home and
help your child practice for their test on Fridays.
HOMEWORK
We would like each child to read for 10 or 15 minutes a night.
A monthly reading chart will be sent home, and should be signed
by the person who listened to the child read. The listener
can be a parent, grandparent, babysitter, older brother or
sister, etc. Time spent reading should be an enjoyable
experience for both parent and child.
NumberKids
Miss Hallisey's and Mrs. MacDonald's
students are participating in an interdistrict program,
NumberKids, that supports our mathematics program while allowing
our students to expand their horizons by meeting and learning
with students from another school district. This program is
organized and run by LEARN (a regional educational service
center). This is an exciting opportunity for our second
graders!
