The reading focus in third grade revolves around building the comprehension skills of cause-effect, summarizing and paraphrasing, making predictions, main idea and details, sequence, drawing conclusions, and fact and opinion. The vocabulary portion consists of building key words, using context clues, and decoding structural analysis.
Math goals entail securing abilities in counting, coin value, understanding the meaning of fractions, adding and subtracting of 1 or 2-digit numbers, number patterns in addition and subtraction facts, using a grid, equivalent names for numbers, identifying 3-D shapes, symmetry, telling time to the hour, using a thermometer, making tally charts, making bar graphs, and interpreting data and solving problems. Some of the skills we develop are multiplication and division facts and operations, decimals, measurement, estimating, and geometrical concepts.
In writing, the third grade uses process writing and the narrative diamond to enable students to write stories employing an entertaining beginning, suspense, a well elaborated main event, and great endings. The language skills include identifying nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs. The subject and predicate parts of the sentence are presented. Capitalization and punctuation rules are to be mastered.
Social Studies at this level introduces the children to communities, maps and globes, citizenship, government, resources, and the national holidays.
