Grade Three

What’s the name of the Community you live in? If you could build your own community, what would it look like? That’s just what  third graders get to do when they study about communities in Social Studies. First, everyone learns that a community is a place where people live, work, and play. Then we discover that the names of many cities and towns have some historical connection or a specific reason for the name they were given. Next we move on to learning about maps and their components: a compass rose, map key, symbols, and scale on a map. Using this knowledge everyone has to develop a community in which they would like to live.  The students in  third grade Language Arts class read biographies about different people.  Then they write a  paper and put together a research project.  Each student makes a presentation to the class about their particular person.  Everyone will  enjoy learning new information about famous and important people who helped make our world a better place.
