Haiti All Around The World Event - May 18

To Whom It May Concern:

Ever since the adoption of the Haitian Flag on May 18, 1803, Haitians all over the world have annually celebrated, recognized and honored this date. As proud, young Haitians at the Norwich Free Academy, we are celebrating through cultural dances, songs, poetry and more. We have dedicated and determined performers, who will shine that evening, but the success of our show depends on you, our audience.

The theme ofthe 2012 show is "Haiti All Around The World" to share that the love for the Haitian culture does not only exist in Haiti but is shared all over the world. The show will take place at the Norwich Free Academy Slater Auditorium at 305 Broadway, on Friday evening May 18, 2012.

Doors will be open at 5:30pm and the show will run from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Donations are welcomed at the door and refreshments will be available for sale. There is a limited amount of parking on campus therefore, punctuality is crucial. Come celebrate with us on this memorable evening, we look forward to seeing you there!

CT State Invention Convention Results - Sat. April 28, 2012

Student finalists from Moriarty and Veterans' Schools participated in the State Invention Convention on Saturday and represented the Norwich Public Schools well! Congratulations to Joyce Ihloff from Moriarty School (Invention: Mouse Mitten) and to Darah Worthington from Veterans' Memorial School (Invention: Glitter Glue) who received First Place Honors in their judging divisions! Well done!

We are very proud of all of our young inventors who competed this year!

Special thanks to the Norwich Rotary for their support of NPS students in the CT Invention Convention.

Get Ready...The Plants are Blooming - G.R.E.E.N.S. Garden Club

The 5^th Grade Norwich G.R.E.E.N.S. Garden Club at John Moriarty School show off their new boots.

G.R.E.E.N.S. Order Form - Order TODAY!

Last year's plant sale was a success! We were able to purchase garden boots with the funds the G.R.E.E.N.S. Garden Club raised through the sale.

Spinach is in the ground already and the garlic tops are poking through the leaf mulch, testing to see if Spring is really here. We will be planting soon for this years plant sale so save some space in your garden for great, student-grown organic, heirloom, non-GMO plants to feed your family with! We will have Broccoli, Cabbage, Cucumber, Eggplant, 4 varieties of Tomato, and 3 varieties of peppers and 3 varieties of squash. There will also be much more planted in the garden so stop by later in the Spring and see what the G.R.E.E.N.S. have growing for our friends and families!

There is a Wiki page being created for the Garden Club where you can check out full descriptions of all the plants that will be available for sale and a price list. An order form will also be available. Spring has almost sprung! As soon as it is live we will get the word out via Facebook, NPS Blog and the NPS website. Stay tuned...

Penny Drive Results

Congratulations to all schools and UCFS staff for raising over $5,000 in this year's Penny Drive! What a phenomenal job, everyone. Please congratulate your students. This year Hickory St. school raised $3.56/student, the highest rate in the district. Mahan rose $1.52/student, the second-highest per pupil rate and had the highest total in the district at $530.06 - well done! Students from both schools will be invited to attend the NFA Pep Rally in April. Thank you to all staff who helped facilitate the project this year. Please find the school totals attached. Green Cleaning Program in School

GREEN CLEANING PROGRAM IN SCHOOLS

(CT PUBLIC ACT 09-81)

The State of Connecticut is requiring that each local and regional board of education implement a green cleaning program for all school buildings and facilities in its district.

Norwich Public Schools is committed to the implementation of this law by providing the staff and, upon request, the parents and guardians of each child enrolled in each school with a written statement of the school district’s green cleaning program as well as making it available on its web site annually. This program information will also be distributed to new staff hired during the school year and to parents or guardians of students transferring in during the school year.

Green cleaning program means the procurement and proper use of environmentally preferable cleaning products as defined by the Department of Administrative Services (DAS) for all state owned buildings, schools and facilities. DAS currently requires that environmentally preferable cleaning products be independently certified by one of two third party certified organizations: Green Seal or Eco Logo.
By July 1, 2011 and thereafter no person shall use a cleaning product in a public school unless it meets the DAS standard.
The types of cleaning products covered in this legislation include: general purpose, bathroom, and glass cleaners, floor strippers and finishes, hand cleaners and soaps. The preferred green cleaning products used by this school district are listed on attachment “A”.
Disinfectants, disinfectant cleaners, sanitizers or antimicrobial products regulated by the federal insecticide, fungicide and rodenticide act are not covered by this law.

The following statement will be part of this school districts program as stated in the new law; “NO PARENT, GUARDIAN, TEACHER OR STAFF MEMBER MAY BRING INTO THE SCHOOL FACILITY ANY CONSUMER PRODUCT WHICH IS INTENDED TO CLEAN, DEODORIZE, SANITIZE OR DISINFECT”

The implementation of this program requires the support and cooperation of everyone including administrators, faculty, staff, parents, guardians and facilities staff.

Norwich Adult Ed and Hickory Street School Partner

A new partnership has formed between Norwich Adult Education and Hickory Street School. High School Credit Diploma Program students are volunteering to read to groups of children at Hickory Street. The young adults from Norwich Adult Education get the opportunity to work on poise, presentation skills, and group collaboration. They can be seen practicing their oral reading skills before heading next door for the "real deal." The children of Hickory Street get the undivided attention of older youth and they ask them plenty of questions...about the stories, and LOTS MORE! It's a win-win situation -- we're not sure who's having more fun!
