Department Overview - The Information Technology Department has two main responsibilities - the coordination, management and implementation of all academic technology programs and the management and support of all business/administrative functions. Effective technology integration is the means to ensure that all students achieve technology literacy.  All professional development activities are aligned with the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) as well as with the State of Connecticut’s Technology Competencies.

Technology Help Desk Support - In an effort to provide an efficient level of technical support to the district, a web-based help desk is in place.  This eliminates the need for users to complete paper work-orders, phone-in or email requests for technical assistance. Users login to the help desk from any computer with an Internet connection. Once a request has been submitted, the program automatically generates an incident ticket and notifies appropriate technicians. Technicians support: 

  • Desktop computers and laptops,
  • Copiers,
  • Fax machines,
  • Digital cameras,
  • Interactive whiteboards,
  • Handheld devices (iPads, iPhones, iPods),
  • Telephones,
  • Printers,
  • Projectors,
  • Routers/switches,
  • Servers,
  • Public address systems and audio/visual equipment,
  • Televisions,
  • Video distribution systems,
  • Digital cameras,
  • Security cameras,and
  • other computerized devices including network cabling and support structures.

Technology Coordination and Maintenance - In addition to the support of all technology systems, the IT Department maintains and coordinates: 

  • Connecticut Education Network (CEN),
  • English Language Learning Information System (ELLIS),
  • Follett Library System,
  • Human Resources Phoenix,
  • Intertel Phone System,
  • Intranet via coNPSnet,
  • Handheld device operating systems (iOS),
  • Microsoft Exchange Server,
  • New England Communications (NEC) phone service,
  • School Content Management System (SchoolCMS via PowerIT),
  • Synergy Video Distribution System,
  • Snapstream Video Distribution System,
  • Student Information System (SIS_Express),
  • Read 180,
  • Discovery Education & Streaming Video,
  • Special Education Software (IEP Direct),
  • Windows Operating Systems 95, 98, 2000, XP, 7, and NT and
  • Macintosh Operating Systems OSX.6 and OSx.7 desktop and server environments.

Technology Services – IT Department staff consist of Coordinator of Instructional Technology and Learning Resources, Network Technician, Computer Technicians, and Webmaster/Social Media Specialist.  Each member of the team has his/her own strengths and is also cross-trained to assist other members of the team when the need arises.  Support services/tasks include: 

  • Set up and manage user and email accounts,
  • Write and coordinate grants,
  • Create graphic elements for online and print publications,
  • Monitor Internet filtering,
  • Administrate network functions,
  • Dispose of electronic waste (eWaste),
  • Train teachers and other staff,
  • Communicate via social media venues,
  • Purchase software/hardware,
  • Guide others in technology use/purchasing,
  • Collaborate with other technology professionals outside of district,
  • File eRate paperwork,
  • Program and train others on use of messaging system (SchoolMessenger),
  • Employ virus protection and threat elimination services,
  • Design and develop three-year district technology plans,
  • Create web design and update web pages.
