Creating Community:
- Students organized a celebration for their parents before Christmas which included an original play with an original set and costumes, a dragon parade, an art exhibit, and a dance performance.
- Staff organized a Papa Gino’s fundraiser and raised over $600
- Students invited Uncas BRIDGES to play a basketball game in their gym- this was very popular and they won!
- After achieving 10,000 minutes of reading as a site, the students and staff invited parents to a celebration with food from around the world and lots of good cheer.
Serving:
- Students Sang and made cards for mentally disabled adults at the Arc of New London County
- Organized a blanket, toy, and food drive and made their own blankets for animals at the humane society
- Worked with a local artist on drawings of these abandoned animals at the humane society for an exhibit at a local art gallery. The exhibit will open March 12 at the NAC Gallery in downtown Norwich
Reading:
- Every day the 30-minute homework period is followed by 15 minutes of silent reading for all students
- At the beginning of the program, staff and students set a goal to read for 10,000 minutes as a group- this goal was accomplished within 2.5 months.
Character: Every Friday staff give out individual certificates of achievement for demonstrating improvement or excellence in many areas, inlcuding:
- The Reader-of-the-Week Award
- The Role Model Award
- The Much-Improved Behavior Award
- The Citizenship Award
- The Great-Job-On-Homework Award
- Bravery Award
- The Overall-Amazing-Attitude Award
