GENERAL INFORMATION

Arrival

Early Schools: 8:20 A.M. to 2:45 P.M., Uncas, Wequonnoc
School officially begins at 8:20 A.M. Students arriving after 8:20 A.M. are considered tardy and
must stop into the school office upon arrival.

Late Schools: 8:50 A.M. to 3:15 P.M., Huntington, Mahan, Moriarty, Stanton, Veterans’
School officially begins at 8:50 A.M. Students arriving after 8:50 A.M. are considered tardy and
must stop into the school office upon arrival.

Dismissal
All children will be dismissed according to their regular bus/transportation/child-care arrangements
each day. Please send in a note if you wish to pick your child up from school. Students
may stay after school only if enrolled in a supervised program or at the request of the teacher.
Parent Pick-Up for Early Release
It is important that your child attend school for the complete school day; however, if it becomes
necessary to have your child dismissed from school prior to the regular dismissal time, please
send in a note to your child’s teacher stating the time he/she needs to be dismissed. No child
is to leave the building unescorted during the school day. Parents must sign students out in the
school office if they wish to pick students up before the regular dismissal time.

School Messenger System
Norwich Public Schools use the School Messenger System to notify parents, guardians, and/or the
designated student emergency contact, of pertinent information regarding your student and
school. The district uses this notification system for the following:
• Daily notification of student absence
• Delayed school openings
• Early dismissals due to weather or school emergencies
• School or district surveys
• Notification of upcoming school or district events
• Other unforeseen emergencies or circumstances
It is crucial that all emergency numbers are kept up to date to ensure that parents, guardians and
/or emergency contacts receive this important message.

Emergency Early Closings / No School / Delayed Openings
At times, schools may close early due to a sudden change in the weather or other emergency. In
addition to the School Messenger Service, the stations listed below will provide early closing
information. Please make it a habit for your family to tune in to a local radio or television station
each morning as you prepare for the day. Announcements of delayed openings or school
cancellations begin about 6:00 A.M. and will be broadcast over the following stations:

Emergency School Closing Schedule
Kindergarten AM Session
This group of students will remain in school until all students are dismissed and will be transported
home with older students.
Preschool AM Session
Parent should contact the school for their child’s dismissal time.
Kindergarten/Preschool PM Session: The PM Session will be cancelled.
In the event of an emergency school closing, we strongly advise you to develop a family
Emergency School Closing Plan now. A family plan might include the following:
- A provision for your child to enter your house with an extra key (location known in
advance to the child);
- Three to five homes, listed in a specific order, that your child could go to until you could
reach him/her; and
- Specific directions for your child about how to notify you of his/her whereabouts.
Please take the time to practice your family Emergency Plan with all children.
 
Delayed Opening Schedule
In the event of inclement weather or other circumstances, the Superintendent may elect to delay
the opening of school. In that event:
• Kindergarten/Preschool AM Session: The AM Session will be cancelled.
• Kindergarten/Preschool PM Session: Students will be transported to school according to
their normal schedule.

Early Dismissal Days (ED) Schedule for Preschool/Kindergarten
On days that are scheduled for early dismissal, shortened sessions (1 hour, 50 minutes) of
preschool and kindergarten will be held. Please note that preschool and kindergarten will have
early release days November 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 24, December 23, March 28, 29, 30. 31, April 1 and the
last day of school.

Grades 1-5 Early Dismissal Schedule
The following dates have been designated as early dismissal days for Grades 1-5: Nov. 3, 4, 5, 24,
Dec. 23, March 30, 31, April 1 & last day of school.
The dismissal times are as follows:
Early Schools: 8:20 A.M.-12:45 P.M. Late Schools: 8:50 A.M.-1:15 P.M.

Other Emergencies
There have been times when it has been necessary to evacuate the school in order to ensure the
safety of students. In that event, students will be transported to another site, where their school
day can continue. Under the advice of police, phone lines must be kept clear and the creation of a
secondary hazard must be avoided. Our School Messenger System will notify parents as soon as
possible.

If it is deemed safe by emergency personnel by the end of the day, students will be transported
home on their regular bus. “Walker” students will be transported back to their home school where
they can be met by parents or walk home along their regular route. Students enrolled in the beforeand
after-school program will be transported back to the school.
