Grade 8 Academics

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

LANGUAGE ARTS:  (J. Leone H1, D. Travers H2)

Language arts classes continue to explore the Elements of Literature through the Holt, Reinhart, and Winston series.  This series is a thematic-based program that integrates age-appropriate selections of various genre, while teaching reading skills and strategies, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, writing, listening and speaking techniques.  Additional novels and projects complement the integrated units that are explored throughout the year.  As stated in the introduction to this series, "the subject matter of the language arts classroom is human experience comprehended and expressed in language."

MATH:  (J. Fields H1, C. Hargus H2)

Math classes cover a variety of algebraic and geometric concepts.  Solving word problems, estimating solutions to problems, and solving problems with customary and metric measures are emphasized in the pre-algebraic session of the course.  Identifying geometric shapes, identifying congruent and similar figures, and performing transformations are topics included in the geometric session.  The algebraic session includes solving simple equations and evaluating expressions.

SCIENCE:  (R. Ashton H1, W. McLaughlin H1)

Topics of study in eighth grade science class include three branches of science: physics, genetics and heredity, and astronomy.  Classroom instruction includes numerous laboratory activities emphasizing the use of inquiry skills, technololgy, and the scientific method to answer student generated questions.  Science notebooks are used on an almost daily basis to build note-taking, observation, and reflections skills.  Students frequently experience the benefits of team teaching with both eighth grade science teachers.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  (D. Piacenza H1, V. Turbes H2)

Social studies classes review major events in U.S. history using text, primary resources, and technology.  Student learning is achieved through individual and group work, roll playing, class discussions and debates.  A hands-on approach is utilized with students working on group activities and class projects.  Topics include the age of discovery, the formation of our government, and proceed from the Civil War to the 20th Century.  The discussion of current events is also a part of our curriculum. 

READING:  (All teachers)

Reading classes focus on the literacy strands of forming a general understanding, developing an interpretation, making reader/text connections and examining the content and structure.  Various trade books and The Elements of Literature textbook are used along with CMT preparation materials.
