Welcome to Art Class Art cultivates self-expression, imagination and creativity as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The art classes at Wequonnoc Elementary School offer students a chance to showcase their critical thinking and problem solving skills through a variety of creative activities. In the art room, students will experiment with techniques in painting, printmaking, drawing and mixed-media sculpture. They will learn about, and use the elements of art and principles of design to create original works of art. Students in Pre-k through first grade are introduced to basic art terminology, skills, and concepts. The art terms, skills and concepts learned in the early years are reinforced and expanded upon in second and third grade. Experimentation is encouraged, and students broaden their understanding of the relationship between the elements of art and principles of design. Fourth and fifth grade students work on refining their skills while learning new concepts. Students are encouraged to perform self-assessments of their work, create more sophisticated and interesting works, and explain their work using art terminology. The students’ art projects encompass all areas of the curriculum. Language arts, math, science and social studies ideas are embedded in the art lessons to reinforce student learning. Students in all grades are encouraged to take risks and celebrate their creative spirit and individuality.
