Expectations in Grade 5
Fifth grade is the culminating experience of your child’s tenure at Wequonnoc School! Language Arts consists of the Houghton Mifflin theme books where students will continue to practice comprehension and vocabulary strategies through differentiated learning experiences. Enrichment groups will reinforce individual reading goals. Expository writing is the type of writing practiced, with a focus on elaboration and details.
Students entering should know their basic math facts. This will be very beneficial to them as in fifth grade students will learn problem solving skills, place value, fractions, data analysis, and estimation.
Our science units include: Earth, Moon and Sun; Sound; and Color Analyzers and the Eye. Social Studies themes consist of: Native American regions; American Colonies and the Revolution; and the Civil War period.
Fifth graders take part in a multicultural learning program teaching the CMT skill of symmetry, through a grant provided by LEARN, called Symmetry and You. The DARE program is also provided to the students by the Norwich Police Department. Once a week, a DARE officer meets with students and teaches them how to say no to drugs and how to make the right choices. This program concludes with a graduation ceremony at the end of the school year.
