Kindergarten

WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN!
In Kindergarten, the first accomplishment your child will be expected to master is writing his/her name with the first letter an uppercase and all others in lowercase. Your child should begin to identify the letters in his/her name.
The year begins with a quick introduction to all the letters of the alphabet and then a more in depth study of each letter and it’s beginning sound. Our goal is to have your child reading at the emergent level by the end of the school year. In order to meet this goal, thirty-seven high frequency words will be introduced to your child, about one per week, throughout the school year. Your child will learn strategies to help assist him/her in the reading process. Expectations in Kindergarten are that your child will recognize 12 letters and 14 sight words by January; and that he/she should recognize all letters and sight words by June.
The math program begins with shape recognition, sorting objects and patterning. Numbers 0-12 will be introduced in the fall. Recognition of 0-12 will be expected by January. At that time the students will be using 0-12 to tell time and to measure. In the spring they will be using 0-12 to begin adding and subtracting. Counting 0-30 will be daily in the beginning of the year. In the winter he/she will be counting to 50, counting by 10’s and counting backwards 10-0. Coins will be introduced in the winter and numbers 13-20 in the spring. Your child will be expected to master these goals by June.
Your child will also be developing his social skills through play with fellow classmates. Much of his/her learning will be accomplished through play and hands-on games. Your child will become an independent learner and will be able to share his/her accomplishments with you at home. Kindergarten is a busy, noisy, active and fun place to be!
