PBIS Program
Fall, 2010
Dear John B. Stanton Families,
We are proud to announce our new Positive Behavior Support program (PBIS) at John B. Stanton School. It is a program brought to us from L.E.A.R.N. and has been implemented throughout our school district. It is a system designed to recognize appropriate conduct, and teach and re-teach our expected behavior in all aspects of our learning community including the bus, bathrooms, hallways and classrooms. We began it the first day of school and the students seem to be really embracing it. Friday, October 1, we held a rally with the NFA cheerleaders to help kick off our shark program. It was a lot of fun!
Stanton’s mascot is the shark and our motto is “Dive in with the S.H.A.R.K.S and Swim to Success.” This motto is on posters throughout the school. We will also be hanging a poster matrix of expected behaviors on the walls around our school. When the children are exemplifying good “shark” behavior they are given a shark’s tooth which is then placed in the jar for a weekly drawing. One child from each grade will win a special pencil and recognition on the Monday Morning News at Stanton.
The team is busy planning special monthly awards for those children that do not receive any major discipline referrals in a month. We will also re-teach expected behaviors of those students that do get discipline referrals. Our hope is that our “shark school” will reduce the incidences that require discipline referrals as the students become more familiar with our expectations and increase time for instruction in every classroom.
The PBS team is very excited about implementing our program. The team worked together last year to plan our program and will continue professional training at workshops this school year. The parents/guardians of our students are very important members of our S.H.A.R.K. Team as well. If you have any questions or suggestions please do not hesitate to call us! And remember……….DIVE IN WITH THE S.H.A.R.K.S AND SWIM TO SUCCESS!
Sincerely, Karen Twomey and Denise Hanner
