COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

LANGUAGE ARTS:

The Language Arts program utilizes Elements of Literature, by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston.  This program, aligned with the Connecticut Frameworks, integrates grammar, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and reading skills instruction.  The thematic arrangement of reading collections lends itself to interdisciplinary units of instruction with the content area subjects.

WRITING

Through authentic student writing and Strategies for Writers by Zaner-Bloser, students will develop the confidence to write an effective expository piece.  Mini-lessons, independent time, and sharing will be used to continually assist students in improving their own writing.  Focus will be on developing skills needed in the prewriting, rough draft, revision, editing and publishing stages.  Students will continuously be exposed to grammar, sentence structure, editing and revising through the use of Daily Oral Language exercises.
