COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
LANGUAGE ARTS:
The Language Arts program utilizes Elements of
Literature,
by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston. This program, aligned with the
Connecticut
Frameworks, integrates grammar, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and
reading
skills instruction. The thematic arrangement of reading
collections
lends itself to interdisciplinary units of instruction with the content
area subjects.
WRITING
MATH:
The Math program utilizes McDougal Littell Middle School Math. Sixth grade strands include: Numeration and Order; Measures, Measurement and Reference Frames; Mental Arithmetic and Number Systems; Algorithms and Procedures; Exploring Data and Chance; Geometry and Spatial Sense; Patterns and Sequences; and Algebra and uses of Variables.SCIENCE:
The Science program includes classroom and hands-on
investigations
including the following topics: Variables; Earth, Moon and Sun
System;
Microworlds; JASON Project; and Long Island Sound.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
The Social Studies program focuses on the ancient
civilizations
of Egypt, Rome and the Middle Ages. Additional units of study
integrated
into our curriculum include map skills, current events, notable Black
Americans
and distinguished women.
