COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Language Arts classes review and reinforce the
writing
process using the "Golden Bricks." Additionally, students read
adolescent
literature and non-fiction texts/materials. This provides for a
better
grasp of the reading/writing connection. Vocabulary skills and
correct
grammar usage are also integral to the Language Arts classroom.
MATH:
Math classes continue to review and reinforce math
skills
in areas of weakness as determined on the 7th Grade
Connecticut
Mastery Test (CMT). This is done to better prepare students for
the
8th Grade Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT). Additionally, math
teachers
continue to work with the Connecticut Academy for Education in
Mathematics,
Science and Technology to develop a standards-based school action plan.
SCIENCE:
Science classes focus on the life sciences.
Students
examine the characteristics of living things, the structure and
function
of cells, and the systems of the human body. Students also learn
to use microscopes and to collect data for analysis. Project
Oceanology
provides field trips to Long Island Sound to extend learning beyond the
classroom. Exploration and hands-on activities are an integral
part
of the science curriculum. Additionally, students learn about
meteorology.
They use data from Teachers' Memorial Middle School's own weather
station
to make local weather forecasts.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
Social Studies classes stress world geography,
beginning
with a general study of the five themes of why and how we study the
world.
After a study of the United States, the classes focus on world
continents,
their countries, culture, and people. A hands-on approach is
utilized
with students working on group activities and class projects.
READING:
Reading class is a component of the 7th and 8th grade
cirrculum. The basis of the reading curriculum is the reading
trade books for comprehension and discussion with connection to the
Literature program offered in Language Arts.
