COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
 

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Language Arts classes continue to explore the Elements of Literature
 through the Holt, Reinhart, and Winston series.  This series is a thematic-based program that integrates age-appropriate selections of various genre, while teaching reading skills and strategies, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, writing, listening, and speaking techniques.  As stated in the introduction to this series, "the subject matter of the language arts classroom is human experience comprehended and expressed in language."

 

MATH:

Math classes concentrate on  algebraic concepts, including using variables to solve equations.  The program provides a strong background in these concepts in order to prepare students for high school mathematics.
 

SCIENCE:

Science classes study areas that include the elements of the physical sciences, earth science, chemistry and life sciences.  In addition to classroom instruction, these topics are explored through a combination of indoor and outdoor laboratory experiments and hands-on activities/projects.
 

SOCIAL STUDIES:

Social Studies classes review major events in U.S. History using texts, primary sources, and technology.  Student learning is achieved through individual and group work, role playing, class discussions and debates.  A hands-on approach is utilized with students working on group activities and class projects.  Topics include the formation of our government and proceed from the Civil War to the present.  The discussion of current events is also a part of our curriculum.
