COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
PHYSICAL EDUCATION:
The Physical Education program reinforces healthy
habits
that encourage an active lifestyle. The program emphasizes
fitness,
cooperation and skill building. This is accomplished through team
games/sports, fitness activities, lifetime skills, and cooperative
activities.
Our goal is to incorporate a variety of activities which motivate
students
to improve their physical fitness.
HEALTH:
The health classes focus on good decision making skills and
refusal skills for all grades. The curriculum used is the
successful Lifeskills program and The Great Body Shop for Middle
School. The sixth grade classes learn how to understand and
improve their self image, and work with decision making skills to
prepare for the years ahead. Seventh grade classes learn decision
making skills and refusal skills with a concentration on Drug Education
and Nutritional Choices. The eighth grade classes focus on an
abstinence based Family Life Education program and appropriate
relationships.
ART:
Students in art classes create and design artwork
ranging
from flat two dimensional projects to building 3-D domes or star
shapes.
Eventually, students learn about architectural styles and use them to
build
house models or monument shapes. Students are also taught art
appreciation.
MUSIC:
The music program explores many areas including
singing
and instruments used in jazz and concert bands as well as
orchestras.
Students engage in discussions and listening exercises of music from
1650
to the present day. Music theory is introduced, requiring
students
to compose and perform their own music.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC:
Instrumental Music returns to Teachers' Memorial in
2006-2007. Students will be offered lessons on a pull out basis
and after school band practices will be available. Concerts
presented in the evening will become part of the program.
WORLD LANGUAGE:
World language promotes an understanding of how languages function (i.e., structure and grammar). It helps to develop an appreciation for differences through exposure to various cultures and nations of the world. In addition, it involves the development of all areas: speaking, listening, writing and reading.
COMPUTER INTEGRATION:
The Computer Integration class at Teachers’ Memorial
Middle
School is based on the idea that students should use the latest
technology
to produce projects based on their present day curriculum. After
an introduction to technology and discussions about Internet safety and
Copyright in the Digital Age, students learn the finer points of the
Microsoft
Office Programs Suite. They then use the skills taught to produce
a project based on what they are presently studying in one of their
other
classes. Some of these projects are taken back to their House to
share with all of the other students at that grade level.
