Third Grade

Here are some of the things we'll be working on:

Reading Math
Writing Science

Writing
Students will write short essays on responsibility.  They will share their essays with the school during the daily morning announcements on the television.
The class is currently using the Narrative Diamond Format to write stories.  They are publishing their pieces on the computer with the help of the Amazing Writng Machine.
  Reading
One of  our themes in our reading series is Traveling to New Communities.  This theme focuses on changes that occur when someone travels to a new place.  We will discuss the many reasons why people move and share information about our families' immigration to the United States.  We'll also be reading the book Sarah, Plain and Tall.  This story relates to the theme of traveling because the main character travels to the prairie from Maine.  This unit will incorporate geography skills as well.
Math
The students are continuing to work in our new  program Everyday Math.  The three units that we expect to cover relate to multiplication, division and fractions.  Please continue to reinforce the basic multiplication and division facts with your child.
Science

The students will be studying Plants  in the spring. We will observe seeds as they germinate, plant fast growing Brassica seeds, and chart their growth.  We'll be able to witness a plant's life cycle in the classroom.  The students will also share  their knowledge of the different parts of a plant in a book that they will be creating.
