Dear Moriarty Environmental Sciences Elementary Magnet School Families,
Our team could not be more excited to welcome our families back to the 2020-2021 school year! After a spring and summer that will long be remembered, we have a renewed energy and commitment to ensuring the safety and wellness of our students and staff, while ensuring our students learn in a highly rigorous learning environment. Although we’ve changed many of our daily operational routines, the heart of Moriarty remains the same.
At Moriarty, we implement an environmental STEM-themed curriculum, which is a curriculum with science, technology, engineering, and math integrated through all core subject areas and includes a lens towards the environmental sciences. Integrated units are developed collaboratively with teachers and use Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core State Standards, Environmental Literacy Strands, and Moriarty’s Magnet Standards. Students investigate environmental STEM units, such as designing plant packages and cleaning oil spills. Units begin with essential questions and develop into inquiry-based learning that extends across math, reading, writing, science, social studies, art, and music.
This year, our most important goal is to welcome back students into a calm, safe and positive environment where every student has the opportunity to be their best and to learn. We understand the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL) and the explicit teaching of social skills and concepts. We lean on the Choose Love SEL program as our primary SEL curriculum. In addition, we implement Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies, or what we call PBIS. Our behavior expectations are simple: Be Respectful, Be Responsible & Be Safe. Beginning the very first day of school, the entire Moriarty staff engages in explicitly teaching expectations and routines. When students achieve these expectations there will be many, many opportunities to celebrate with fun and exciting events planned across the year. We continue to incorporate movement throughout our day by adding more time to play in kindergarten, learning outdoors as much as possible, and extended recess periods each day.
If your child is joining us in person (hybrid learning) or virtually through a remote learning program, we are thrilled you chose the Moriarty team as your learning partners.
