September 2022 District Newsletter

Emailed to families September 14, 2022

Dear Norwich Public Schools Education Community,

It is with great pride and excitement that I welcome you back to school in Norwich!

I hope everyone had a chance to relax this summer, enjoy the beautiful weather and most importantly spend time with their families. At NPS, we spent much of our summer work preparing to welcome our students back. We diligently interviewed, hired, on-boarded and trained new teachers and staff. In the event of an absence, and lack of adequate substitute coverage, we have hired Floater Teachers at every school to ensure classroom coverage. Our goal is that every Norwich student is taught by a highly qualified and certified teacher. We have also added Assistant Principals to support anti-bullying and safety efforts. To ensure the safety and well-being of our students we have installed vape detectors in schools, additional surveillance cameras and safety equipment. All teachers, administrators and staff have engaged in rigorous professional learning to ensure that the education in the Norwich Public Schools is state of the art.

The theme of the 2022-2023 school year is ‘Engaging, Rigorous Instruction All Day Every Day.’ We continue to visit each other's classrooms to calibrate teaching and learning in instructional rounds. We are lessening our reliance on worksheets and computer assisted instruction and increasing time where students are reading, discussing, creating, imagining and hypothesizing. We aim to capitalize on every instructional minute. We have added student support positions such as School Counselor positions, Teacher Deans of Climate and Culture and Behaviorist staff members. We’ve also partnered with Columbia University Teachers College and their staff developers to visit Norwich classrooms and work with our teachers and principals.

In addition to these efforts, we are significantly increasing opportunities for parent engagement and volunteerism.

We appreciate your partnership and look forward to an exciting school year.

Respectfully,

Dr. Kristen E. Stringfellow, Superintendent

Community Conversations

We need your input!

Last year, we held monthly “Superintendent Coffee Hours” and parents were encouraged to join the Superintendent and District Administrators for an open conversation. This year, we are excited to transition this initiative into “Community Conversations.”

Community Conversations will be held on topics of YOUR interest! Each Community Conversation will begin with a brief topic overview presentation, and break out into a handful of groups where parents can speak directly to topic experts, district administration, community partners and more. Our goal is to address topics that are MOST relevant to the community, receive input on the subject, and connect families with valuable resources. It is also an opportunity for community input before decisions are made on important topics and school policies.

Student Policies are in place for the health and safety of all our students. Each month, families will receive a new video in their inbox reviewing different student policies. Our goal for these videos is to set students and families up for success by clearly outlining expectations. In our first video, District Nursing Supervisor Laura Dietrich goes over the Student Medication Policy.
