Superintendent Update

District

Dear Norwich Families and Staff:

I sincerely hope that everyone is healthy and able to enjoy some of this good weather. Here are some updates:

  • Please remember that Monday, May 25, 2020, is the Memorial Day holiday and that there will be no distance learning on that day.

  • Please notice that the COVID-19 district email has been disabled as it is no longer needed. If you have questions please direct them to the teacher, principal, or other staff members by email or call the school.

  • Teachers have been very busy packing up student belongings and principals will be coordinating with families soon to let you know about the pick-up schedule and details for each school. We will be distributing:

    • Student personal belongings from their desk and/or locker

    • Personal belongings from middle school gym lockers

    • Student personal medication from the nurse’s office (if applicable)

    • Student owned musical instruments (if applicable)

    • Free Scholastic books for each student generously donated by the Nooyi Family

  • We will be issuing final report cards in the following manner as advised by our teachers and principals:

    • Elementary Remote Learning Report Card:

      • Students and families will receive feedback about the student’s performance during remote learning for ELA (reading and writing) and math through a narrative format.  The narrative information will focus on the content and strategies students engaged in during this at-home learning environment.

      • In addition, physical education, art, and music teachers will be using performance indicators.  The indicators are:

        • “Passing with Distinction”

        • “Passing”

        • “Passing Needs Improvement”

      • Information about each indicator will be listed on the report card.  Included in this report card will be feedback about personal/social qualities and work habits as it pertains to both the live sessions and the assigned tasks.

      • Social studies and science were part of the exploratory options of the schedule. So, they will not be reported on during this trimester.

    • Middle School Remote Learning Report Card:

      • Students will receive a grade of either

        • “Pass with Distinction”

        • “Pass”

        • “Pass-Needs Improvement”

        • Teachers have developed consistent criteria that they will use to determine grades in each subject.

      • Attached is a copy of the updated school calendar. Please note that the last day of school has changed (1 day earlier) due to a change in the primary election day.

        • Please note that the last day of school is staggered

          • Grade 6-8 is June 16 (early release)

          • Pre-K to grade 5 is June 17 (early release)

Thank you for your patience and your support. Have a joyful holiday weekend!

Sincerely,

Kristen E. Stringfellow, Ed.D.
Superintendent
