Message from the Superintendent

This correspondence will serve as a follow up to questions posed by parents regarding the incident at Teachers Memorial Global Magnet Middle School yesterday.

[ Parent Question: ]
Why was the Robo alert call not sent to ALL Norwich parents and staff?

[ Response: ]
In my experience, when it is a weather-related update or a cancelation of an event we certainly would send the call to all Norwich Families, but when it is an urgent message regarding one school we focus the calls to the families and staff of that school. Calls to all schools sometimes have the unintended consequence of a young child answering the telephone and hearing the message and/or a parent or staff member misinterpreting the phone call to think that the incident occurred at their school. I agree with the feedback that the letter could have been sent to all Norwich families and staff via email and that is a communication strategy we plan to use in the future.

[ Parent Concern: ]
I am a parent at Teachers Memorial, why did I not receive a telephone call?

[ Response: ]
We sent the call to ALL families and staff who registered on school messenger to receive Robo alert telephone calls. Tomorrow we are sending out a consent and update form to all Norwich families and staff. Please be sure to look for that form and update your contact information so that you are sure to receive all calls and/or emails/text alerts that you sign up for and give consent to in the future.

[ Question: ]
What are the consequences for the child who brought the BB gun to school?

[ Response: ]
While I am not permitted to disclose information regarding an individual student, I can share our Norwich Public Schools Discipline Policy which we are required to adhere to. https://www.norwichpublicschools.org/.../5114_student-discipl...

[ Question: ]
What supports were put in place for students and staff?

[ Response: ]
Norwich Police officers were dispatched to the school in the morning the Principal, Assistant Principal and I addressed the staff at 7:30 AM.

The Principal, Assistant Principal, and mental health staff provided teachers with a resource from the Sandy Hook Promise, "Say Something" training PowerPoint to share with all students during extended homeroom today https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/saysomethingresources

Additional mental health staff was on standby ready to deploy to the school if requested.

Parent inquiries were addressed by the Principal and Assistant Principal on a case-by-case basis all day today.

Thank you for your commitment to the safety of our students and staff.
