Updated DPH Guidance for School Quarantine

As of 3/1/22

No quarantine for in school close contact exposure

  • There will be no quarantine (for staff or students) from any in-school close contact exposure. There is only quarantine for close contact exposure at home and outside of school. Per DPH, this is because in school transmission is incredibly rare.
  • The school will still contact parents and staff to inform you of close contact exposure so that you can be aware of the level of risk and so that you can watch for symptoms.
  • You will notice that the district COVID dashboard will no longer list the number of close contacts as they are not reported to DPH any longer.

Quarantine time changed from 10 days to 5 days for COVID Positive persons

  • Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 should isolate at home for at least 5 days, or longer if symptoms develop and persist. Please refer to the chart below.

Quarantine time for close contact exposure outside of school changed from 10 days to 5 days

  • Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated persons exposed to a COVID positive person outside of school must quarantine at home and test for COVID 5 days after the last day of exposure.

Screen & Stay is not applicable because in-school close contacts don’t quarantine unless symptomatic.

CDC Change in Definition of Fully Vaccinated has not yet been adopted by DPH

  • The definition of “fully vaccinated” in CT schools remains 2 weeks from last vaccine in the series.
  • CDC has changed the definition to boosted or within 6 months of last vaccine in the series.
  • It is likely that DPH will soon endorse this CDC change of definition for CT school staff and students.
  •  In preparation for that change, we ask families to please send an updated vaccination card copy to the school nurse, if applicable.

Important Reminders from DPH:

  • Stay at home when you feel sick or have a fever, runny nose, or shortness of breath.
  • It is recommended to continue wearing a mask, maintain social distancing when indoors and wash hands frequently.
  • According to the CDC and DPH, vaccination is the most important strategy to keep kids in school, staff at work and limiting the severity of symptoms of the disease.

New Changes to Mask Policy:

  • As of 2/28/22, Masks are optional on school buses, and at school.

Here is the protocol that schools will use:
